What essential oil repels mosquitoes?

As we all know, mosquito repellents are generally applied on the body or sprayed around the body to protect people from mosquito bites and prevent mosquito-borne diseases. Deet and DEET are currently widely used mosquito repellents, and long-term use also causes people’s concerns about the environment and health. In addition, DEET may cause allergies and low blood pressure and other problems in children.

In the long-term co-evolution process of plants and insects, some insect resistant prickly biomass, including αpinene, eucalyptol, limonene, isoterpinene, citronellol, camphor and thymol, can show obvious repellent activity against insects, so environmentally friendly, easy to degrade and safer plant mosquito repellent products have become a major selling point.

linyue is a manufacturer specializing in the production of essential oils. Through years of research on essential oils, a better ratio can be formulated to repel mosquitoes.

Which essential oils are widely used to make mosquito repellent products?

Citronella (Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf) oil, lemon Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora Hook) oil and basil (Ocimum basilicum) oil are three representatives of plant essential oil repellents.

Citronella oil has a good repellent effect on Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes. According to the statistical results before 1998, 8 out of 9 plant repellent products registered in the United States contain different proportions of citronella oil. Some studies have tested the use of citronella oil under laboratory conditions. The repellent activity of Cymbopogon nardus (L.) Rendle) oil and lemon eucalyptus oil against Anopheles arabis.

The results showed that the relative protection values of 90% and 95% could be achieved after immediate application of the three essential oils under the concentration of 10% and 20%. Only citronella oil can maintain the relative protection value of 70% for 3 h and 4 h. From outside, the repellent activity of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus were measured by 24 plant essential oils on the market. It was found that 13 essential oils, including ginger oil, clove bud oil, and cabernet oil, showed more than 95% repellent rate. The best repellent effect of Aedes albopictus was 30% clove bud oil, the protection time could reach 130 minutes, patchouli oil could reach 1.5 hours.

At present, more plant essential oil repellent characteristics, has been widely used in all walks of life, such as citronella oil microsphere repellent fabric, repellent bracelet, repellent spray, repellent nail polish and so on.

Which is better than Blend oil or single oil?

After experimental study of the effective protection rate of single essential oil and compound essential oil repellent, the effective protection time of compound essential oil repellent is about 4h, which is significantly longer than that of single essential oil, indicating that the combination of essential oil has a synergistic effect. This may be related to the increase in the types of active ingredients or the increase in the content of one of the active ingredients after the combination of essential oils.

For example, peppermint and citrus mixed essential oil, citrus peel essential oil and peppermint essential oil are derived from plant peel, leaves, through distillation, extraction and other ways to obtain a special aromatic oily liquid, which belongs to the secondary metabolites of plants. Its known active ingredients, α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, aromatic alcohol, menthol, and menthone, have been confirmed to have significant repellent effects on mosquitoes. The reason may be that after being sprayed with essential oil, the skin forms a vapor barrier, which interferes with the chemical sensors of mosquito antennae and prevents them from sensing volatiles on the surface of the human body, thereby preventing people from being bitten by mosquitoes.
