Study on cinnamon essential oil

Composition analysis of cinnamon essential oil by GC-MS

Cinnamon essential oil mainly contains a variety of aromatic compounds, the content of up to 90.499 %, including cinnamyl alcohol, cinnamaldehyde, 1,5, 8 trimethyl-dihydronaphthalene, trans-cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, 3-methoxycinnamaldehyde, eugenol, styrene, benzaldehyde, phenylpropanal, para-corymbose, acetophenone, 2-methylacetophenone, diisobutyl phthalate, etc.

Followed by terpenoids, the content reached 8.938%. Including the leftover dilute, alpha pinic dilute, beta pinic dilute, laurel dilute, alpha goo ene, alpha pine oil dilute, 4 – terpineol, alpha ylang oil dilute, calamus terpene, alpha qin xi, beta qin xi, trans – caryophyllene, cadinene, gamma ylang oil dilute, calamus terpene, carnation thin oxide, cadinene, delta – cadinene, gamma cadinene, alpha elemi, 1, 8-cineole, 6-methyl-5-heptene-2-one, α-myrrh alcohol, etc.

Finally, the smaller fatty acids include cetanoic acid and oleic acid.

Antibacterial properties of cinnamon essential oil

Cinnamon essential oil is a yellow to reddish-brown clarified liquid, mainly present in cinnamon branches, cinnamon skin, fruit and other parts. Cinnamon essential oil also has a good antibacterial ability, and has a good inhibition or killing effect on bacteria and fungi. The antibacterial ability of cinnamon essential oil can be applied in many fields, such as soil cinnamon has good anti-lactobacillus pneumophilus activity, and can be applied to the antibacterial of vacation or family water bath facilities. 

Cinnamon essential oil can inhibit the growth of aflatus conidium and colony, and has a good prospect in the control of corn mildew. In addition, the combination of cinnamon and cloves is reliable and safe as an antibacterial, antioxidant in the food and pharmaceutical industries. In recent years, the antibacterial mechanism of cinnamon essential oil has been reported. In the experiments on the induction of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, it was found that cinnamon essential oil first significantly reduced the metabolic activity and replication ability of fine bacteria cells, and then affected the integrity of bacterial membrane. 

Cinnamon essential oil can change the outer membrane protein of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. At low concentration, it increases the amount of outer membrane protein of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. At high concentration, the treated outer membrane protein with molecular weight of 42.7 and 80.8 ku disappears, indicating that cinnamon oil can inhibit the growth of bacteria by changing the outer membrane protein composition of bacterial biofilm.

The effect of natural volatilization, water bath heating, combustion and spray atomization on the inhibition and killing of Staphylococcus albus was discussed, and the changes of composition were analyzed.

The main organic compounds measured by HS-SPME-GC-MS using different aromatherapy methods showed that the relative contents of cinnamaldehyde and α-pinene were higher under MBC, and the relative contents of cinnamaldehyde and α-pinene were less different under MBC, indicating that the two aromatherapy methods may have the same bactericidal components. The bactericidal effect is mainly achieved by high spatial concentration of cinnamaldehyde.

The sterilization ability of spray atomization is second only to that of water bath heating fragrance, with a spatial concentration of 20 μL/L. This method can wave out cinnamon essential oil components in the form of spray and cover the whole device, increasing the spatial concentration of essential oil components, thus showing a better sterilization effect. The space concentration of cinnamon essential oil added in the combustion method was 20 times that in the water bath method and 10 times that in the spray method, which was 200μL /L. 

However, the detected organic volatile compounds were not much in the combustion method, and the relative content of cinnamaldehyde detected in the combustion method was slightly lower than that in the spray atomized fragrance method. This is because the combustion method produces an open flame, and the high temperature burns part of the cinnamon essential oil components, and its antibacterial ability is the worst of the four ways.

The content of cinnamaldehyde in the natural evaporation and water bath heating methods was lower than that in the first two methods, indicating that other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) might play a role, and the relative content of VOCs in the natural fragrance method was greater than 1%, and the relative content of α-pinene was nearly twice that of the first two methods. The relative contents of β-caryophyllene, γ-ylangolene and delta-juniperene were also above 1%, so it was speculated that the natural fragrance of terpenes (such as α-pinene) enhanced the bactericidal ability of cinnamaldehyde. 

The relative content of cinnamaldehyde in the water bath heating fragrance is the lowest, this is because the MBC in the water bath heating method is the smallest, 10 μL/L spatial concentration, and the amount of cinnamon essential oil added in this test is the least, and its bactericidal effect is outstanding, because under the heating condition, more terpene components are heated out and cooperate with cinnamaldehyde to play a bactericidal effect.

 For example, the relative contents of α-pinene, δ-juniperene, β-red myrrh and γ-ylang-oleene were all above 2%, the relative contents of 10 terpenes such as α-ylang-oleene were all above 1%, and the relative contents of each terpene with relative contents above 1% reached 29.76%. At this time, it plays an important role in the sterilization process of cinnamon essential oil water bath heating. Therefore, the bactericidal ability of water bath heating depends on the joint action of relatively high content of terpene and cinnamaldehyde.
